At Personal Finance 101 we have a passion for education. We believe that, properly educated, everyone is capable of making great financial decisions. To fulfill this passion, our mission is to teach people how to easily and effectively manage their money to help them meet their goals.
Personal Finance 101 offers full service financial education to individuals as well as small and large groups. We are not traditional financial planners and will not give you specific investment advice or manage your money. We will also not sell you any products. What we will do for you is much more important: we will give you the knowledge you need to independently make decisions about your money and take control of your financial future.
People ask all the time what makes us different from other financial planners and it comes down to education and sales. With most financial planners you will go in, meet with them for an hour or two, pay a couple hundred dollars and come out with a list of recommendations about what you should do with your money – many of which will make a great deal of money for your planner. This can be very useful, but the biggest disadvantage to most financial planners is that you don’t learn from them. You don’t learn WHY those recommendations were made. You don’t learn whether they’re really appropriate. You don’t learn how to evaluate future recommendations. At Personal Finance 101 we teach you all of that.
For the about the same cost as a 1-2 hour consultation with a financial planner you can get up to 16 hours of group coaching which will teach you everything you need to know about managing your money – including how to evaluate advice from financial planners. When you leave our classes you will be knowledgeable enough to make your own financial decisions. Or, if you really want to work with an investment advisor, you’ll know enough to not get sold on bad investments.
If you prefer a more personal touch, we also offer one-on-one coaching at a fraction of the price of a traditional planner.
Personal Finance 101 was founded in 2005 by Amanda Moore. Amanda is a former employee of The Vanguard Group where she worked in their Institutional Client Services department helping with the daily administration of 401(k) plans. After leaving Vanguard, she began giving virtual advice through various online message boards. She received her Certificate in Financial planning from Boston University.
Personal Finance 101 was founded in 2005 to fill what seems to be a gaping hole in the education system. After spending several years answering questions on various online message boards including Craigslist and MSN Money, our founder realized that there was a distressing lack of financial education opportunities available. The knowledge needed to make sound financial decisions was just not being taught and people were moving forward in their lives without even basic knowledge to guide them.
After reading one too many stories about someone being taken advantage of by financial salesmen and people struggling to get out from under a ton of debt, she decided to try something different.
Starting with small groups of acquaintances gathered from her local area, Amanda started teaching basic financial education classes. Those classes have been developed into the curriculum that is being used today. Since its inception, Personal Finance 101 has helped to educate hundreds of individuals on the topics of Goal Setting, Budgeting, Debt, Credit, Investing and Retirement.
