Budgeting 101

Budgets, the big "B" word, no one really likes them, many people actively avoid them, but most people need them. At least a basic one.

People come to me all the time and say "I make good money but by the end of the month it's all gone and I can't afford to save! How can I save more?" and my response is always "What's your budget like?" That question is typically followed by a glance at me, a long look at the shoes and a "Weeellllll..." which tells me that this person doesn't have a budget so of course they don't know where their money is going. We're going to try to fix that.

Note: Prior to attending this class you will be asked to track your spending for a minimum of 2 weeks. You will also be asked to develop a budget using that tracking. Materials will be provided to you in advance.

In Budgeting 101 the main points we will cover are:

  • How to make, track and keep to a budget.
  • The difference between a want and a need.
  • How to find your "latte factor."
  • (Relatively) painless ways to get more bang for your budgeted buck.
  • How to set up your budget so it almost tracks itself.
